In the early days of Twitter, I used to send out short updates just to keep everyone in the loop since so much was happening. It's been a while, but you signed up for short, monthly updates from Twitter so we thought it was time to start sharing more information. We've had quite a year. If you haven't visited in a while, we'd like to invite you to come have a look at http://twitter.com -- we've been busy!
Growing Up In the course of a year, registered Twitter accounts have grown more than 1,500% and our team has grown 500%. Recently, we hired our 140th employee! His name is Aaron and he's an engineer focused on building internal tools to help promote productivity, communication, and support within our company. We celebrated with a little dance party.
Features of Note Some features of note that we released over the course of a year include the ability to create lists, quickly spread information with a retweet button, and an easier way to activate your mobile phone to work with Twitter over SMS. We also built a new mobile web site that looks and works much better on smart phones.
Feeling Inspired By working together during critical times when others needed help, sharing important information that otherwise might not make the news, and inventing new and interesting ways to use Twitter, you've shown us that Twitter is more than a triumph of technology -- it is a triumph of humanity. Projects like Fledgling and Hope140 were inspired by you.
Chirp! While there may only be 140 full-time employees working at the Twitter offices, there are thousands of dedicated platform developers who have now created more than 70,000 registered Twitter applications creating variety and utility for all of us. We'll be gathering this spring at Chirp, our first ever official Twitter developer conference.
Thanks, Biz Stone, Co-founder (@Biz) Twitter, Inc.

Twitter is a popular social network that was began in 2006 by Jack Dorsey. Though the Twitter service has been fairly mainstreamed—even making it onto a NBC Tonight Show comedy bit—Twitter began as a communication tool for business.
Twittering is much like text messaging with a cell phone, or one can think of Twittering as an Internet Relay Chat (IRC) for the web, or some people have even described Twitter as miniature blog posts. Twitter offers businesses a great way to stay in touch with what’s happening in the economy, in their specific industry, allowing relevant information and news to arrive at CEO and entrepreneurs’ fingertips. Twittering can be used to keep in touch with clients, and business associates, allow one to be notified of deals and specials, and monitor other companies.
However, Twittering can be a big waste of time too. People can spend countless hours sending and receiving tweets and not get anything that is actually productive accomplished. How do business professionals sort through all of the Twitter chatter and get to the meat and potatoes of what they really need to know?
Twitter apps are available to filter through some of the pointless Twitter babble. TweetDeck is one of the more popular third-party Twitter tools, and there are several online databases available with tons of these Twitter widgets. However, probably the best way to navigate Twitter for business is to use a Twitter Business Directory. And there are just as many Twitter Business Directories out on the Web as people have hands, so to help clear away some of the clutter, here’s a helpful listing of Twitter business directories.
Twibs at www.twibs.com Twibs is a general Twitter business directory with city and/or state search functions. Ultimate Small Business Twitter List at smallbiztrends.com/2009/01/the-ultimate-small-business-twitter-list.html This twitter business directory helps those wanting to keep up with the hot topics and trends in small business, having created a list of people and organizations within the small business world that may be of interest to follow.
Brands That Tweet at buzzmarketingfortech.blogspot.com/2008/12/brands-that-tweet.html Though this twitter business directory groups brand names with Twitter accounts, the majority of the brand name Twitter accounts are not managed by the brands themselves.
C-Level Tweeters at buzzmarketingfortech.blogspot.com/2008/12/c-level-tweeters.html C-Level Tweeters is run by the same guy who does Brands That Tweet. The directory lists CEOs, CTOs, and CMOs.
Analyst Twitter Directory at sagecircle.wordpress.com/directories/analyst-twitter-directory This is mainly a business directory of various industry analysts on Twitter.
A Wiki of Social Media Marketing Examples at wiki.beingpeterkim.com This list is more than just a simple Twitter search, but users can separate out the brand names using Social Media by type.
Media on Twitter at mediaontwitter.pbworks.com Formatted in a wiki, this directory is a list of resources and contact information helpful to local and international journalists and bloggers alike. Social Brand Index at www.socialbrandindex.com Social Brand Index lists tweets by various categories such as business, education, entertainment, executives and notable individuals, for consumers, government and politics, housing market, media, non-profit, organizations, service providers, social properties, technology, and travel. Just Tweet It at justtweetit.com
Though not a Twitter business directory per say, Just Tweet It is a listing of Twitter directories organized by genre and category, and may be of help to a business profession looking for a more generalized Twitter search.

Twitter, the popular social networking tool, has become a world-wide craze. Posts, otherwise known as tweets, are limited to 140 characters, and the service was first adopted by mainly business and media outlets, used to keep updated on the daily and sometimes minute to minute changes in their areas of expertise.
However, Twitter has gone mainstream. More and more people are utilizing the service for their own needs and agendas. One of the unusual aspects of Twitter is the thrust of the free social networking service’s popularity into the general population has been due to the increasing number of celebrities on Twitter. In fact, the idea of celebrities on Twitter has become so ingrained into Twitter culture, that the concept has even turned into a comedy bit on NBC’s The Tonight Show with Conan O’Brien, called Celebrity Twitter Tracker.
Normally, celebrities avoid at all costs the paparazzi and crave their needed and deserved privacy, but for some strange reason, when a celebrity opens up a twitter account, they seem to talk about everything.
Here are the top nine celebrities on Twitter and their most recent posts according to NYDaily News.
Britney Spears recently tweeted, “Hung out by the pool yesterday, checked out some sketches of costumes for the tour, and rented Pride and Glory. The costumes are crazy! – Brit”
Lance Armstrong tweeted, “Good Morning. Today is world cancer day. Make it a good one.”
Saquille O’Neal basketball star tweeted, “ Say it aint so what I’m reading about Michael phelps….is this real 8:19 AM Feb 2nd from txt”
CNN News anchor Rick Sanchez tweeted, “Watching Gibbs, sounds like he’s saying Obama no longer pussy-footing around. Does that mean to hell with bipartisanship?”
John Cleese: “I am almost dead but nonetheless invigorated by the flush of ground-breaking liberal electoral success.”
Ashton Kutcher who seems to get the most buzz about being a celebrity on Twitter recently commented on Christian Bale’s anger: “Poor man, he was hard at work, minding his own business, got slightly upset with someone and now the whole world knows about it.”
Dave Matthews wondered about odors on a recent tweet. “I wonder if snail fairts smell if you’re close enough to the snail’s a—hole to smell something so tiny?”
Demi Moore dispelled a rumor: “Been asked all day so to clear up rumors we are not adopting a child but what a gift if that at some time was something we wanted to do!”
Solange Knowles tweeted, “I feel and look homeless. At least the weather is nice.”
Other celebrities on Twitter that may be worth checking our are:
• Peter Pacinelli • John Hodgman • James Kyson Lee • Greg Grunberg • Felicia Day • Brea Gant • David Mitchel • Fran Drescher • Greg Grunberg • John Lithgow • LeVar Burton • Luke Wilson • Mischa Barton • Oprah Winfrey • Penn Jilette • Rainn Wilson • Stephen Fry • Wil Wheaton • William Shatner • Ric Marlow • David Lohr • Perez Hilton • Nick Jonas • Kevin Jonas • Joe Jonas • Trent REzno • 50 Cent • Erykah Badu • Henry Rollins • Imogen Heap • John Mayer • Kanye West

In 2006, Jack Dorsey had an idea, and he called it Twitter. Since 2006 Twitter has grown in extreme popularity world-wide and is a remarkable development social networking, utilizing the web, text-messaging, and cell phone technology. In fact, by 2013 estimates are that Twitter will gain a total of one billion users.
With all of that Twitter chatter going on, it can be difficult to search Twitter, especially with over forty percent of tweets being what is termed by a San Antonio based market research firm as "pointless babble." Plus, let's not mention all of the self-promotion, spam, and conversational topics that those outside of the specific conversation may not actually be interested in.
How does one get through all of the Twitter chatter and find relevant data with searching Twitter then-because sometimes, a search on Twitter can be like looking for a needle in an intergalactic sized haystack.
Well, several Twitter applications exist such as TweetDeck and TwitterLocal. Online databases like Twitdom and Twtbase list a multitude of other Twitter apps that can help sort through all the tweets too and there are third-party Twitter directories. Directories from anything related to the Irish to the Ultimate List of Moms on Twitter exist.
However, one of best ways to search Twitter is probably from Twitter's own website. Here is a list of three search tips for Twitter that many people don't necessarily think about.
Dates
Tweets are limited to 140 characters-that's characters, not words, so even empty spaces between words are counted within the limit. Because of this limitation, people post an incredible number of short tweets almost on an hourly basis. Knowing the approximate date of tweet and save tons of time in searching Twitter.
In the Twitter advanced search option there is a date bar and an easy drop down menu allows you to select your date specific message.
Shared Links
When you search Twitter, and you are looking for something specific, keep in mind that many tweets can contain links to news information, articles, consumer products, people, and websites in general. Many of these "shared links" are retweeted-that is, Twitter users will send a link tweet on to other Twitter users.
In the people search section of the Twitter search function, type in the person's name who sent the shared link, use a key term in the keywords search section, and mark the box that states you only want tweets returned where the link was listed. If you add the date search from the Twitter search tip above, you'll only increase the likelihood of finding what you are looking for.
Attitudes
Attitudes are a really cool search Twitter feature that even Google never came up with. Twitter users can specify in a Twitter search for happy or sad, positive or negative tweets. If you want to skip the advanced search function of Twitter but still use the attitude search function, simply type a :) or a :( after the search term. For example, if you type pizza :), you'll find positive tweets about pizza. Type pizza :(, you'll get negative responses.

Finding anything or anyone using Twitter can be a daunting task. So many people all over the world utilize Twitter, it's almost like a recreation of the Web, only more massive with millions and millions of miniature blog posts.
Social networking in an environment like that can offer some unique challenges! But, it is also fun, and worthwhile if done right.
To help fellow Twitter's in finding exactly the information they need or want people have designed what is known as a Twitter directory. There are all kinds of Twitter directories though: a geographically based Twitter directory, various celebrity Twitter directories, and Twitter business directories, to just name a few. There's even a Twitter directory that lists anything and everyone Irish related, and there are some very, very specifically tuned Twitter directories, such as the Twitter Directory of Learning Professionals (& Others) on Twitter and the Twitter directory of Book Trade People.
